“If the numbers we see in domestic violence were applied to terrorism or gang violence, the entire country would be up in arms, and it would be the lead story on the news every night.”

Emerging Issues in DV

The emerging issue in behavioral and social sciences became immigrant survivors of domestic violence. Immigrant victims of domestic violence deal with greater challenges due to stricter law enforcement policies (which often implement federal immigration enforcement practices) and could underreport abuse (www.mcbw.org). However, communities around the United States could help to improve situation by launching programs similar to that of San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón’s that orient on helping and educating immigrant communities on DV. As Gascón emphasized, “We want to provide services that are linguistically and culturally competent. We don’t want these cases to go unreported” (Kowalski, 2011, para.1).
