“If the numbers we see in domestic violence were applied to terrorism or gang violence, the entire country would be up in arms, and it would be the lead story on the news every night.”

My name is Irina Fout and currently I am a student at UMUC Europe in my senior year, majoring in Psychology. Behavioral sciences always captured my attention, and in order to expand my knowledge in that area I have been enrolling in as many psychology classes as possible. This term, I enrolled in the course that explores social and interpersonal problems rather than intrapersonal issues. The course I am referring to is BEHS 453- Domestic Violence.  Domestic violence is a widespread practice that affects people around the world, and results in physical injuries, psychological traumas, morbidity and mortality. Domestic violence can take several forms, be it child abuse, intimate partner violence, family violence, or violence against particular gender – the results are always the same – psychological and in some cases physical lifetime trauma. Moreover, there is no gender, age, or social status that is immune from domestic violence – it has all “faces”: young and old, male and female, rich and poor…  According to National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (2009), “domestic violence is one of the most chronically underreported crimes” (p. 2). Thus, it should be a goal of all social science students and professionals to:
·      to bring attention of our societies to the issue of domestic violence through electronic and print media (e.g. like this blog), and domestic violence awareness events
·      to create programs with potentially high success rate that orient on preventing domestic violence
·      to increase the number of programs and agencies that offer help to the victims of domestic violence
“For most of recorded history, parental violence against children and men's violence against wives was explicitly or implicitly condoned. Those who had the power to prevent and/or punish this violence through religion, law, or custom, openly or tacitly approved it…The reason violence against women and children is finally out in the open is that activists have brought it to global attention."
-       Riane Eisler
Bill Cosby (n.d.) could not say better of my current attitudes towards domestic violence,
“The main goal of the future is to stop violence. The world is addicted to it.”
